For the Love of Vintage: An Interview with Kariss from Shy, Strange, Manic.

If you’ve not seen already, I’ve been hopping around the blogosphere asking like-minded bloggers about their love for vintage fashion. Last week, I wrote down some of my own thoughts, but this week I’ll be chatting with Kariss,  who writes an amazing blog over at www.shystrangemanic.com. The fiery-haired vixen has long been one of my faves, and I’m super jealous of her exciting London lifestyle.

So, when did you first get into vintage style?

I don’t know what started it exactly. But, I do know that I was decked out in Hell Bunny dresses by the time I was in my second year of university, which is almost 10 years ago. At the time, I lived in baggy jeans and band t-shirts, so it felt like a revelation. I realised that the 50’s dress shape, tight at the waist and then flaring out, is really flattering to my pear body shape so it gave me confidence.

Fifties style is my favourite! What exactly is it about vintage that interests you?

I think it’s the history. I’m a huge history nerd so I love seeing how outfits have changed and evolved. Of course, everyone loves the glamour; it really makes me feel more confident. Most days to work I won’t wear makeup or do anything with my hair but just wearing the right dress can make me feel more put together.

Snap, I’m a history geek too! What would you say your favourite era is?

The 1950’s, but I like to borrow style choices from other eras too. The 50’s had this fun femininity about it, that was conservative and also really sexy. On one hand, you had bullet bras and skin-tight capri pants. On the other hand, you had the traditional full skirts, petticoats, hat and gloves. I adore the fun prints, the 50’s did them like no other!
And they embraced colour throughout their lives in such a unique way, I think that’s why so many people are so interested in it still today, it’s like a fantasy. There are aspects from the 40’s I love too, especially the hair and the way women embraced trousers during the war era while still looking glam!

What does vintage mean to you and your identity?

I’ve been wearing vintage inspired clothing for so long now I don’t know what I’d wear without it!  For me, it’s about comfort, confidence and fun!

Funnily enough, I still have the photo from when Kariss and I first met at the Lincolnshire Blogger Meet in 2014. See if you can spot us (we’re both ginger and in green dresses!)
